Needle & Injection Phobia Treatment for Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults in Portland, OR

What Is Needle or Injection Phobia?

Many children, teens, and young adults feel nervous about shots, blood draws, vaccines, IVs, or other medical procedures. For some, however, this fear becomes so intense that it interferes with medical care, causes significant distress, or leads to avoiding healthcare appointments altogether. This is often referred to as needle phobia, injection phobia, or fear of medical procedures.

Needle phobia can involve intense anxiety, panic symptoms, crying, freezing, attempts to escape, or even fainting. Young people may worry about pain, losing control, experiencing a medical emergency, or anticipating a procedure long before it occurs. These fears can make routine healthcare, vaccinations, blood tests, and necessary medical treatment much more difficult.

The good news is that needle and injection phobias are highly treatable.

Evidence-Based Treatment for Needle Phobia

As a child psychologist, teen therapist, and young adult therapist in Portland, Oregon, I provide evidence-based treatment for children, adolescents, and young adults struggling with fear of needles, injections, blood draws, vaccinations, medical procedures, and healthcare-related anxiety.

Treatment is individualized and designed to help young people gradually build confidence, reduce avoidance, and develop effective coping strategies.

I use evidence-based approaches including:

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

  • Exposure-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Anxiety management skills

  • Parent coaching and caregiver support

Exposure-based treatment helps individuals face feared situations gradually and at their own pace. Rather than avoiding reminders of needles or medical procedures, clients learn skills for tolerating anxiety while discovering that they can successfully cope with feared situations.

What to Expect During Therapy

Treatment begins with understanding the specific fears, thoughts, experiences, and situations contributing to anxiety. Together, we develop a personalized treatment plan that respects your child's pace while building confidence over time.

Therapy may focus on:

  • Understanding how anxiety and avoidance work

  • Learning coping and relaxation skills

  • Addressing catastrophic fears about needles or medical procedures

  • Gradually practicing exposure exercises

  • Building confidence around healthcare experiences

  • Preparing for upcoming vaccinations, blood draws, or medical appointments

  • Reducing panic symptoms and avoidance

  • Supporting independence and resilience

Exposure activities are collaborative and gradual. Depending on a child's needs, exposures may begin with talking about medical procedures, looking at pictures, watching videos, handling medical supplies, practicing coping strategies, or visiting medical settings before progressing to more challenging situations.

Support for Families

Parents and caregivers often play an important role in treatment. Many families understandably develop routines aimed at reducing distress, but some of these strategies can unintentionally reinforce anxiety over time.

Parent involvement focuses on helping caregivers support their child's confidence, encourage brave behavior, and respond effectively to anxiety before, during, and after medical procedures.

Building Confidence for the Future
