OCD Therapy for Children, Teens, and Young Adults

What is OCD?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or worries (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) that are used to reduce anxiety or distress. OCD can show up in many ways, including excessive worries about contamination, harm, mistakes, health, morality, or uncertainty. Obsessive thoughts in children and teens may lead to behaviors such as excessive checking, reassurance-seeking, washing, repeating, confessing, or avoiding certain situations. Without effective support, OCD can interfere with school, friendships, family life, and daily functioning.

Evidence-Based OCD Treatment

As an OCD therapist, I use evidence-based approaches that help children, teens, and young adults learn to respond differently to OCD. I have received specialized training in pediatric OCD treatment. The gold-standard treatment for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention therapy (ERP), which helps individuals gradually face feared situations while resisting compulsive behaviors and rituals. As an experienced ERP therapist, I work collaboratively with clients to build confidence, reduce anxiety, and break the cycle that keeps OCD going.

I also integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which helps clients develop psychological flexibility, make room for uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, and focus on living according to their values rather than OCD's rules.

For parents and caregivers, I may incorporate elements of Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE), an evidence-based parent-based treatment that helps caregivers reduce accommodations that unintentionally reinforce OCD and anxiety. SPACE empowers parents with practical strategies to support their child while encouraging resilience, independence, and long-term recovery.

What to Expect During Therapy

Whether you're looking for a child OCD therapist, teen OCD therapist, or therapist for yourself as and adult, therapy begins with a thorough assessment to understand how OCD is affecting day-to-day life. Together, we'll identify OCD triggers, obsessions, compulsions, and avoidance patterns, then create an individualized treatment plan.

Treatment focuses on teaching practical skills, building resilience, and gradually working through fears using ERP. Parents are often included in treatment to learn strategies that support progress at home and reduce accommodations that unintentionally reinforce OCD. The goal of compulsive behaviors treatment is not to eliminate all anxiety, but to help children and teens gain confidence in managing uncertainty so OCD no longer controls their lives.
