Parent Management Training (PMT) for Caregivers of Children and Teens in Portland, OR
What Is Parent Management Training?
Parent Management Training (PMT), sometimes called Behavioral Parent Training, is an evidence-based approach that helps caregivers respond more effectively to challenging behaviors while strengthening their relationship with their child. PMT is based on the understanding that children learn through their interactions with the people around them, and that small changes in parenting strategies can lead to meaningful improvements in behavior, emotional regulation, and family functioning.
PMT is not about blame or criticism. Parenting is hard, especially when a child is struggling. The goal is to help caregivers feel more confident, effective, and supported while learning practical tools that can reduce stress and improve daily life at home.
What Difficulties Can PMT Help With?
As a child and adolescent psychologist in Portland, OR, I provide Parent Management Training for caregivers of children and teens experiencing:
ADHD
Oppositional or defiant behaviors
Tantrums and emotional outbursts
Aggression
Difficulty following directions
Family conflict
Impulsivity
Emotional regulation difficulties
Anxiety-related avoidance
School-related challenges
Autism and neurodivergence
Difficulty with transitions or routines
Sleep and bedtime struggles
Behavioral concerns related to chronic stress or life transitions
PMT can be helpful whether behaviors occur occasionally or have become a significant source of conflict and stress within the family.
What to Expect During Parent Management Training
PMT is primarily focused on working with caregivers. Sessions are designed to help parents better understand their child's behavior and develop effective strategies that can be used consistently at home.
Together, we may focus on:
Understanding why behaviors occur
Increasing positive parent-child interactions
Strengthening connection and communication
Using praise and positive reinforcement effectively
Setting clear and consistent expectations
Responding to challenging behavior calmly and confidently
Creating effective routines and structure
Reducing power struggles
Supporting emotional regulation
Improving family relationships
Strategies are tailored to your child's developmental level, temperament, strengths, and family circumstances.
My Approach to PMT
My approach to Parent Management Training is collaborative, compassionate, and practical. I recognize that every family is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all parenting approach.
I draw from evidence-based behavioral parent training models while considering each child's developmental needs, neurodivergence, mental health concerns, and family context. For children experiencing anxiety or OCD, I may integrate principles from SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions). For children with emotional regulation difficulties, I may incorporate DBT-informed or ACT-based strategies.
The goal is not to create "perfect" behavior. Instead, we focus on helping children build skills, strengthening family relationships, and increasing caregivers' confidence in responding effectively to challenges as they arise.
Why Caregiver Involvement Matters
Research consistently shows that caregivers play a critical role in supporting children's emotional and behavioral development. Small, consistent changes in parenting approaches can have a powerful impact on a child's behavior, confidence, emotional well-being, and long-term success.
Parent Management Training provides caregivers with practical, evidence-based tools that can be used long after therapy ends, helping families create a more positive, connected, and effective home environment.
