WPATH Assessments & Letters of Support for Gender-Affirming Care in Portland, OR

What Is a WPATH Assessment?

Some gender-affirming medical interventions, such as hormone therapy or gender-affirming surgeries, may require documentation from a mental health professional. A WPATH assessment is a collaborative evaluation designed to support individuals seeking access to gender-affirming medical care while ensuring that recommendations are thoughtful, individualized, and aligned with current standards of care.

As a psychologist providing gender-affirming care for children, teens, and young adults, I strive to make the assessment process respectful, affirming, and focused on understanding your goals and needs rather than creating unnecessary barriers.

My Approach to Gender-Affirming Evaluations

I provide WPATH assessments and letters of support for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse adolescents and young adults seeking gender-affirming medical care.

My approach is grounded in collaboration, informed consent, and respect for client autonomy. Assessments focus on understanding your gender history, current experiences, support systems, goals for treatment, and any factors that may affect medical decision-making. The purpose is not gatekeeping, but helping individuals access appropriate care while providing documentation that healthcare providers may require.

I recognize that gender diversity is a normal part of human experience and approach evaluations from an affirming, developmentally informed perspective.

What to Expect During the Assessment Process

The evaluation process typically involves one or more appointments to discuss your gender identity, transition goals, emotional well-being, medical history, and support systems. For adolescents, parents or caregivers may participate when appropriate.

If a letter of support is indicated, documentation is prepared in accordance with the requirements of the treating medical provider and current WPATH Standards of Care. I may also collaborate with physicians, endocrinologists, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to support coordinated care.
